Things that are happening in our world.Changing the world 1 font at a time
I’m not a typography junkee, and probably don’t stay ‘up-to-date’ with all the new styles as much as I should. But, compared to the average Joe on the street I know quite a bit about fonts, or at least know what their names are. Some of my nearest and dearest have actually tagged me with the endearing title, ‘Font boy’.
Anyhow, there are some really interesting things happening with fonts at the moment and with recent trends of ‘VINTAGE’ design you’ve got collaborative designers re-creating amazing fonts from back in the day. I’m sure there’s heaps I haven’t discovered but these guys are pretty cool. They are called Lost Type You can download sweet fonts and donate how ever much you think is a fair amount. Loving these guys.
I also saw an article recently from GOOD that I found intriguing. I won’t go into the whole story but basically Chattanooga, in the US has developed it’s own typeface (Chatype) and acquired $7000 through Kickstarted. An excerpt from the article summarised the concept. “The goal is to help the city and its businesses forge a distinct and cohesive identity through custom typeface, sending a visual message to the world that Chattanooga – a rapidly growing city in the midst of a creative renaissance – is ‘more than just your average Southern town.’” Pretty huge concept to help unite a city/nation. fonts that were cool to me in the 90s that i stuck on everything: eight track, fontdiner, stereo hifi, messaround
I’m fond of more abstract fonts mkanig an appearance on the Internet, especially in graphical mediums. With support for CSS growing and expanding I’m sure vintage fonts will make a comeback as designers look further in creating more artistic visions on the web.As far as my interests go I’m shocked that no one has been able to come up with a good Mathematical font and method for the Internet. It’s shocking that after all these years we can’t even write equations without including them as images.
